Shapton is one of the big names in Japanese wet grinding stones. They are recognized by the characteristic rough glass plate, which acts as a non-slip surface for the stone. Thus, it is not the glass that you grind on.
The grinding stone consists of a synthetic stone - the white part - which is made of aluminum oxide and binder, as well as a hardened glass plate. The purpose of the glass plate is, among other things, to prevent the stone from bending as it is exposed to water and pressure over time.
Shapton Glass Stones come in a variety of grain sizes. This stone is a grain 8000, which we consider a fine stone - i.e. a stone that is primarily used for polishing after the rough work of grinding a new egg has already been done.
This stone is of the Splash&Go type that you also know from Naniwa. This means that the stone does not need to be immersed in water every time before it can be used. It would be a good idea to submerge a brand new stone in water before the very first grind, but after that you can simply add water to the surface of the stone as needed as you grind.
